Google updates have always been a nightmare for webmasters and SEO’s. Since last 3-4 years Google spam team is very active in doing algorithmic changes to fight spammers (especially black hat and grey hatters). We have just entered November of 2014 and I think it’s a good time to take a quick recap of all the major Google updates which happened this year. You might want to check your analytics to see if any of these have impacted your organic traffic.
May 19, 2014 Panda 4.0 Update
This was the first panda update of this year and had both algorithmic and refresh components attached to it. They have updated their engine with some intelligence to catch automatic spam. The impact was significant with almost 7.5 English queries effected.
July 24, 2014 – Google Pigeon – The First local SEO update ever
Google pigeon (another funny name given to an update) is the first Google local result update ever. This was an algorithmic update which checks the IP of the user and the local search query to display most relevant local result. Local directories like yelp got boost in their rankings.
August 28, 2014 – Google Authorship Removed
After photo-drop update in June 2014, SEO’s (I am not going to talk about this update) were skeptical about the importance of Google authorship, but they never knew that Google will eventually kill something which we thought to be an important aspect for user experience. Frankly this happened because of the way authorship was used by the spammers, really spoiled the user experience which Google did not like at all and killed the Authorship.
September 23, 2014 – Panda 4.1 – the 27th panda of all time.
Panda 4.1 again was an algorithmic update but the impact was not as much as it was with 4.0.
October 17, 2014 – Penguin 3.0 – Not as expected by webmasters – Good News for Black hatters
Most awaited update – penguin 3.0, did not meet the expectations of webmasters and SEO’s. We all expected it to be a much bigger update, but nothing major happened this time. This was a normal panda data refresh. It looks like the Matt’s team is still struggling to find new link spam factors to inject in the algorithm (Good news for black and grey hatters I guess).
October 21, 2014 – Google Pirate 2.0 – Torrent, subtitles websites took a hit
This was the second DMCA update after 2012 and really gave a hard time to torrent and subtitles webmasters. If you are the owner of any torrent and subtitles website then this update might have given you tears from everywhere.
I will try update this post with new Google updates (if any) before New Year. I hope Google does not give us a really bad update on New YearJ.
Which update impacted your business the most? Let me know in my comment box.
